With winter’s arrival in Margaret River, a visit to one of the inviting cellar doors, complete with crackling wood fire, seems the perfect setting to sample the best the region has to offer.
Vasse Felix is one of my personal favourites, I’m quite partial to their full bodied, creamy Chardonnay. Their winemaker, Virginia Willcock spoke about the wine tasting experience and how to make the most of your visit to Margaret River.
“Whether its a SBS, a Chardonnay, whether its from that producer or this producer, taste as many as you can. The Cabernet from one producer might be a bigger style that you prefer or you might find a more elegant one down the road that suits your palate. When you come to Margaret River you have to open your mind and taste every single wine that you can possibly get your hands on because it will train your aroma memory and your palate memory of what this region is about.”

If time was limited, my ‘must do’ tips would be Vasse Felix (of course), Voyager Estate and Leeuwin Estate, all three vineyards are with 10 minutes of The Roozen Residence and all offer a unique experience both the cellar door and top notch restaurants.
Other notable wineries nearby are Cape Mentelle, Fraser Gallop, Cullens, Pierro and Woodlands, all well worth the visit.
